BISS - British and International Sailors Society
The work of this society is wide-ranging,
covering:
- Ship Visiting - Port Chaplain in conjunction with those of other organisations
endeavours to visit each and every ship irrespective of country of registration
or nationality of the crew.
- Welfare - Diverse needs of the seafarers and their families from a
talk about family or spiritual problems to welfare on board the boat.
Port Chaplains are often the first to notice when all is not well on
board. In recent years, instances have occurred where entire crews have
been abandoned without payment, food and water. In the case of accidents,
hospital visiting and, in the case of severe injury, a wife may be flown
out to the hospital.
- Seafarers Centres - Helping with other societies, to provide a centre
which offers a warm and friendly welcome to visiting seafarers where
food and refreshment, telephones, Internet Connections, television &
reading materials are available. The BISS minibus transports seafarers
to the Centre and local shops.
